The NSR was first used for commercial transport between Europe and East Asia in 2009.

Russia should strategically expand transport 
on the NSR as a transport route to replace the Suez Canal route.

There are two reasons 
why the NSR is attracting attention as an alternative route to the Suez Canal route. 
The first advantage is that the cruising distance is shorter than 
that of the Suez Canal route. 
The second advantage is that there are no difficult points on the route = choke points. 
The Suez Canal route has choke points called the Barb Armandeb Strait 
(the strait that runs from the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden) 
and the Strait of Malacca, and is known to carry risks such as pirates.

There are costs and risks that hinder the expansion of the use of the NSR
and some issues need to be resolved. 
In order to improve the low “predictability” 
of voyages, which is a high risk for shipping companies, 
it is necessary to improve the accuracy of weather and sea conditions forecasts 
and clarify the icebreaker support fee. In addition, 
it is required to improve profitability by improving the fuel efficiency 
of icebreakers and reducing labor costs by training seafarers with skills 
and experience peculiar to the ice sea. 
It is important to alleviate these issues 
and enhance the superiority of the "Northeast Passage NSR" over the Suez Canal route.

The Suez Canal is impassable for very large vessels, 
but the international supply chain will continue to grow. 
To that end, it is important to reduce distribution costs.

with small nuclear reactors". 
If there are no restrictions on the size of ships navigating the Suez Canal,
