In the U.S. auto industry, China is already said to be ahead of the U.S. in EVs. Will Ford still develop an EV?
BYD, China's leading EV company, sold 1.9 million EVs in 2022. BYD has already sur-passed Stellar, the largest EV company in the United States, as the world leader in sales (1.3 million units).
"Chinese EVs" are much more competitive in terms of price, which is more accessi-ble to consumers. In China, the average price is about 73,800 yuan ($15,000), much cheaper than EVs sold in the United States.
However, EVs made in China are currently difficult to obtain in the U.S. market. The reason is that the US government imposes high tariffs on Chinese EVs.
In addition, China has a near monopoly on manufacturing the batteries used in EVs. Of the negative and positive electrodes, which are the main parts of batteries, China produces 92% of the negative active material and 77% of the positive active mate-rial.
China now refines 73% of the world's cobalt and 67% of the world's lithium, making it virtually in control of the key minerals needed for battery cells, as well as mining and processing.
In addition, the United States relies on almost 100% imports of graphite, which is the heaviest material for batteries, and much of it comes from China.
I knew this was going to happen. That's why I continue to make proposals to speed up the development of hydrogen fueled vehicles.
The world cannot compete with China in terms of electric cars. This is not China's fault. This is because a resource-poor country developed an electric car by relying on China.
If this continues, the United States will start WW3 by targeting China's EV resources, just as it started the Ukraine war by targeting Russia's resources.
