Thank you for taking the time to express your views regarding tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

Our Nation’s critical steel and aluminum industries have been harmed for years by unfair trade practices and global excess capacity and production, which weakens our economy and poses a threat to our national security. Further closures of domestic steel and aluminum facilities would shrink our ability to produce enough steel and aluminum to meet national defense and critical industry needs in the event of a national emergency. As part of my National Security Strategy, my Administration will continue to counter unfair trade practices that distort markets and jeopardize America’s national security.

For this reason, I used my authority under section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to place a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum imports from most countries. Any country with which the United States has a security relationship can discuss alternative ways to address our national security concerns, including those about global excess capacity and production. If a country is able to present an alternative solution, other than these tariffs, that appropriately addresses the threat to our national security caused by steel and aluminum imports from that country, we are willing to consider using that solution instead.

Thank you again for writing. A Nation that does not protect prosperity at home cannot protect its interests abroad. To learn more about the steps my Administration is taking to protect the American steel and aluminum industries and our national security, please visit WhiteHouse.gov/Tariffs. As President, I am committed to fair and reciprocal trade practices that lead to a more effective and balanced world trading system.

Sincerely,
