Driving the Day

This morning at 9 a.m. ET, President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump host the official State Welcome Ceremony for French President Emmanuel Macron and Mrs. Brigitte Macron on the South Lawn. It is the first State Visit of the Trump Presidency. Watch live.

The ‘unbreakable’ friendship of America and France

America’s relationship with France predates our country’s founding. When American colonists fought for independence, France supported them with military and economic aid. From the days of Benjamin Franklin and General Marquis de Lafayette to the modern era with Presidents Trump and Macron, U.S. and French leaders have long shared common values on a range of issues.

Today, the countries’ two leaders have forged a close bond. “Both President Macron and I understand our responsibility to prioritize the interests of our countries and, at the same time, to be respectful of the world in which we live,” President Trump said in Paris last year. “The friendship between our two nations—and ourselves, I might add—is unbreakable.”

The First Couples met last night before today’s official visit. President Trump, the First Lady, President Macron, and Mrs. Macron took a scenic tour of the monuments in our Nation’s capital. They then traveled to President George Washington’s home in Mount Vernon, Virginia, for dinner ahead of today’s welcome ceremony.

President Trump calls the U.S.-France bond “unbreakable.” History Shows He’s Right.
